Prince William, Duchess Catherine and their three children spent Christmas at their country mansion in Anm Hall. It is located on Queen Elizabeth's Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, about 190 kilometers northeast of London. However, the family cannot spend their time as planned.

"As the '(Daily) Mail' revealed this week, both the Cambridges and the Wessexes are spending Christmas in Norfolk. Do they have to return (home) earlier? No comment from the Palace," writes Royal reporter Rebecca English on Twitter. What is this tweet about?

Prince William and Duchess Catherine: Corona messes up the plans

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's, 56, corona lockdown system for England (excluding Wales) consists of four stages. Each includes protective measures of different severity. Which region of England is classified in which level depends on the level of local infection. When the Cambridges – according to media reports on December 11th – traveled from London to Ann Hall, Norfolk was divided into stage two. Travel was not recommended, but it was not prohibited. You could also meet up with up to six people from different households outdoors.

On December 23, the government announced that the mutated coronavirus measures for Norfolk and all of South West England would be tightened for at least two weeks on December 26 at 1 a.m. The entire area is now in lockdown level four. Goodbye Christmas spirit.

Means: People are only allowed to leave their homes for very important reasons, for example to go to work or to the doctor. Outside you are allowed to go for a walk and visit public gardens and parks – but only on your own, with members of your own household or at most with someone outside the household, keeping a two-meter distance. A Christmas visit to Kate's family in Berkshire was therefore canceled, as were visits from friends in the area around Anm Hall.

Do the Cambridges have to stay in Norfolk until further notice?

However, Prince William and Duchess Catherine will not be stuck in their domicile; a return trip to London is possible. "You can only leave your home or the place where you live on vacation (…) if you have a reasonable excuse. For example, when you go home or seek refuge," the website says the English government. Whether or not Kate and William have already started their way back to Kensington Palace is unknown.

They will be back in London by January 6th at the latest: Primary schools in England will open their doors again – according to the status on December 28th. Prince George, 7, and Princess Charlotte, 5, will then return to Thomas's Battersea School.
