Best-selling author Hilary Mantel does not believe in a future for the monarchy. And she doesn’t understand why the Queen doesn’t abdicate.

She became world famous with her “Wolf Hall” trilogy about Thomas Cromwell, but bestselling author Hilary Mantel (68) also has a lot to say about the court of the 21st century. In an interview with “The Telegraph” she reportedly stated about the monarchy, according to British media reports: “I don’t know how long the institution will last. I’m not sure if it will outlast William. I think it will be hers be the last great era. ”

And Mantel added that she wished the Queen felt able to abdicate so that Charles wouldn’t have to wait so long. But the Queen sees it as a “sacred task” from which she cannot abdicate, in the opinion of the author, while the public sees it as a job from which one could withdraw. And she says of Elizabeth II (95): “I wonder if she is the only person who really believes in the monarchy now, and I am sure that she believes in her wholeheartedly.”

Hilary Mantel received the Booker Prize for her two novels “Wölfe” and “Falken”. With “Spiegel und Licht” she published volume three of the “Tudor Trilogy” in 2020.
