Royals: They help themselves from their mothers wardrobe

Even old things can prove themselves. Royal dresses are often given to daughters and daughters-in-law and worn again by them. Practical! The most recent example: Princess Estelle wears her mother’s dress from 1987.

As soon as the European royals appear in public, the cameras click. The outfits of the royal family members in particular are then hotly debated. The attentive observer will notice a recycled piece every now and then. And not just in their own wardrobe: some royals seem to be big fans of the inheritance of their clothes.

Birthday dress remains birthday dress

We practically mean that everything repeats itself in fashion and that many trends are celebrating their comeback. This is also the case with the XXL statement collar, which is currently particularly popular among fashionistas. So it is not noticeable that Princess Victoria dresses her daughter in exactly the same dress with a white collar that she wore on her birthday in 1987. Old things prove their worth and can still be worn wonderfully today.

Not an isolated case with the Swedes

And that wasn’t the first time! What annoys many little siblings, the Royals have perfected: the application of clothes. Because the royal family members seem to hang on some of their clothes, they keep them for future generations. The Swedish royal family in particular is a role model when it comes to recycling clothes and Co., because not only Princess Victoria, 41, often shows herself in her favorite items, she also likes to wear her mother’s clothes.

Princess Victoria uses Queen Silvia’s wardrobe

One of the most striking examples of this swap of clothes: Victoria’s appearance at the Nobel Prize in 2018. Because the widely exposed evening dress has been in the family’s possession for over 20 years. Queen Silvia, now 74, already wore the robe in 1995 when she was awarded the prestigious award.

At the Nobel Prize 2018, Victoria surprised with her choice of clothes: she relied on Queen Silvia's taste and chose a robe from her mother's closet.

Repeat at Victoria

But there is still a longer period of time between wearing the same dress. Victoria wore a dress in April 2017 that was seen on her mother back in 1980. A cute detail when comparing the photos: Victoria is in the picture of Queen Silvia in the said polka dot dress at her mother’s side, and as a three-year-old at the time, she shyly clings to the skirt that she wears herself almost 40 years later.

On the occasion of Princess Victoria's third birthday, Queen Silvia chose a polka dot dress. Victoria was probably all too happy to wear the special dress.

But Victoria doesn’t just prefer Silvia’s older clothes. In 2017 she wore a jacket from her mother, who presented it to the public in 2013 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the throne of King Carl Gustaf. Although both are smartly dressed with the jacket, they combine them completely differently. While Silvia opted for a knee-length black skirt and a light turtleneck sweater, Victoria chose wide trousers and a white blouse with bow ties.

Same part, different combinations. Although Princess Victoria borrowed her mother's jacket, she combines it completely differently and creates a new look.

Princess Estelle already wore her mother’s things

Victoria seems to like the fact that she can borrow clothes from her mother. So good, in fact, that she proceeds similarly with her daughter Estelle, 6. The little princess often wore clothes from Mama Victoria in public. For example, on the occasion of Victoria Day 2016, when the future heir to the throne put on a dress from 1982.

Princess Estelle also benefits from stored clothes. The little princess wore a dress from Mama Victoria in July 2016. And obviously has fun with it: She poses in the light blue dress much happier than her mother.

Queen Máxima wears clothes from Princess Beatrix

But not only the Swedes think it makes sense to wear clothes. Queen Máxima, 47, has also been spotted wearing familiar clothes several times. For example, at the May 5th 2014 concert, where she borrowed a green evening dress from mother-in-law Princess Beatrix, 80. The retired Queen of the Netherlands showed herself in the special robe in 1981.

For your visit to "Koninklijk Theater Carré" In Amsterdam, Queen Máxima used her mother-in-law's wardrobe and chose a green robe with fringes and embroidery. Although a few minor changes have been made to the waist and collar, the partner look looks great on both of them.

A tradition that Máxima is happy to continue. Last year she loaned her eldest daughter, Princess Amalia, 15, a ski jacket. The Dutch royals are officially photographed annually during their winter vacation, so that this loan was captured in the best possible way.

In 2007 Queen Máxima wore the black jacket of the label O'Neill, ten years later daughter Amalia shows herself in the same model.

One evening dress, two women

Like mother like daughter, the motto of the Monegasque seems to be the same. Because Princess Caroline, 61, also lent daughter Charlotte Casiraghi 32, an evening dress. Charlotte wore the patterned silk dress at the Rose Ball 2017, Caroline showed up in the same dress in December 2000.

Charlotte Casiraghi also let off steam in mom's wardrobe and chose a patterned evening dress by Princess Caroline for the red carpet.

Do queen and mother-in-law Sophia have the same taste?

In Spain – as in the Netherlands – like mother-in-law, like daughter-in-law. Because Queen Letizia, 46, was also inspired by the family and showed herself in a red skirt-blouse ensemble by Queen Sophia, 80. A good choice, the gaudy outfit looked good on both of them.

The fact that the young royals help themselves to their (in-laws) mothers’ closets is not only a compliment to them, but also wonderfully normal. It also shows that putting on clothes doesn’t always have to be annoying. On the contrary – Beatrix, Silvia and Co. will certainly be happy when they see their daughters in their own cloakroom.
