Large majority open to tough corona interventions

More than two thirds of Germans consider tougher measures to be necessary to combat the pandemic than the SPD, Greens and FDP have just decided in the Bundestag. Unlike the supporters of the SPD and the Greens, FDP supporters generally reject a lockdown.

A large majority of Germans are of the opinion that neither the three parties of the future traffic light coalition nor the designated Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz paid sufficient attention to combating the corona pandemic. Only 17 percent each consider the previous commitment of the traffic light parties and Scholz to be sufficient.

In a survey by the opinion research institute Forsa for the RTL / ntv trend barometer, 73 percent said that the traffic light parties did not take sufficient care of fighting the pandemic. 70 percent say this about Scholz. A majority of supporters of the SPD, Greens and FDP also share this view.

A majority of 71 percent of German citizens are also of the opinion that tougher measures would be necessary to combat the pandemic than the SPD, Greens and FDP decided in the Bundestag last week. Only 20 percent consider the adopted measures to be sufficient. The majority of supporters of the SPD, Greens and FDP also consider the measures adopted to be inadequate.

A good third rejects lockdown in any case

69 percent of German citizens think it is right if Christmas markets are not allowed to be opened this year when the number of infections increases. 27 percent consider a ban on Christmas markets to be wrong. The majority of AfD supporters are the only ones who oppose closing Christmas markets when the number of infections increases.

If the number of infections continues to rise, 61 percent of German citizens also consider a lockdown, including the closure of shops, clubs and leisure facilities, exit and contact restrictions and a ban on larger events, to be right. 36 percent are against a general lockdown, even if the number of infections continues to rise.

Unlike the supporters of the SPD and the Greens (as well as the supporters of the Union and Left Party), the majority of the FDP supporters (53 percent) are against a new lockdown. AfD supporters reject a general lockdown even more clearly (82 percent).

FDP supporters especially like more power for state parliaments

Opinions are divided on the question of the transfer of responsibility for corona measures to the state parliaments, as decided by the Bundestag last week. 46 percent think it is right that, according to the new Infection Protection Act, the state parliaments in the individual federal states decide on exit restrictions. 44 percent don’t think that’s right, 10 percent don’t feel confident enough to make an assessment.

Clear differences can be seen in this question between the supporters of the future coalition partners: While 70 percent of the FDP supporters believe that it is right to move the decision on corona measures to the state parliaments, it is among the SPD supporters (56 percent) and the Greens Followers (49 percent) significantly less.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany from November 19th to 22nd. Database: 1004 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points.
