Migration issue in the case of Belarus divides Germany

Around half of Germans are in favor of accepting migrants from the Belarusian-Polish border area, and just as many reject this. Across the political camps, the understanding of the Polish barrier measures prevails.

Germany is divided on the question of whether the Federal Republic should accept some of the migrants from the Polish-Belarusian border. In a Forsa survey for the RTL / ntv trend barometer, 47 percent of those questioned are in favor of Germany accepting some of these refugees. 47 percent also reject this.

In West Germany, 49 of the respondents are in favor of accepting some of the migrants, 46 percent are against. In East Germany, 33 percent are in favor and 57 percent are against. The majority of supporters of the SPD, Greens and Left are in favor, while the majority of supporters of Union, FDP and AfD are against.

56 percent of the supporters of the SPD are in favor of accepting migrants from the border area between Belarus and Poland, 73 percent of the Greens and 72 percent of the left. 56 percent of the supporters of the Union speak out against it, with the FDP it is 73 percent, with the AfD 98 percent. Zero percent of AfD supporters are in favor of accepting migrants.

Understanding of Polish barrier measures

When asked whether the European Union should take in the refugees, 49 percent said yes and 46 percent said no. On this question, too, the majority of West Germans (51 percent) and supporters of the SPD (57), Greens (74) and Leftists (72) are in favor. East Germans (56) and supporters of the Union (54), the FDP (72) and the AfD (96) answer the majority with no.

66 percent of Germans understand that Poland is building additional fences on its border with Belarus and using more soldiers to further secure its external border. 29 percent of all respondents do not understand this. More often than not, supporters of the Greens (47) and the Left (51) have no understanding for the strengthening of the border by Poland. 49 percent of the Greens and 42 percent of the left-wing supporters understand.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany on November 10, 2021. Database: 1004 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points.
