SPD distance to the Union is shrinking

For the SPD, the Union is back in sight, almost independently of the sensational victory in Saarland. Union and FDP lose easily, the left continue to languish.

When it comes to party preferences – which were largely collected before the state elections in Saarland – the SPD can make up ground. You and the other parties each gain one percentage point, while the CDU/CSU and FDP each lose one percentage point.

If there were a federal election now, the parties could expect the following result: CDU/CSU 26 percent (2021 federal election: 24.1 percent), SPD 24 percent (25.7), Greens 18 percent (14.8), FDP 9 percent (11 .5), AfD 9 percent (10.3), Left 5 percent (4.9). 9 percent of voters (8.7 percent) would choose other parties. The proportion of non-voters and undecided is 22 percent and thus slightly below the proportion of non-voters in the federal election (23.4 percent)

If those entitled to vote could elect their chancellor directly, 42 percent (-2 percentage points) would currently choose incumbent Olaf Scholz and an unchanged 20 percent would choose CDU leader Friedrich Merz. 83 percent of SPD supporters would choose Scholz, and 53 percent of CDU/CSU supporters would choose Merz.

The assessments of political competence have changed only minimally compared to the previous week. An unchanged 17 percent of all eligible voters currently trust the SPD, 9 percent the Union, 10 percent the Greens, 4 percent the FDP (-1 percentage point) and 3 percent the other parties. 57 percent do not trust any party to solve the problems in Germany.
