The majority of Germans support Scholz at Taurus

56 percent of German citizens believe that the Chancellor’s refusal to send the Taurus cruise missile to Ukraine is correct. However, the number of people satisfied with German support is decreasing compared to the previous month.

Chancellor Scholz has just reiterated his rejection of the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. According to the current RTL/ntv trend barometer, 56 percent of German citizens think this is correct and believe that Germany should not make these precision weapons available to Ukraine. However, 35 percent of those surveyed are in favor of such a delivery.

When it comes to the Federal Government’s commitment to Ukraine in general, Germans are divided. At 39 percent, a slight majority of those surveyed said that the level of support for Ukraine from the federal government was “just right.” 30 percent are of the opinion that the government is doing too little for Ukraine, 28 percent believe that the support is too much.

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, Forsa has asked German citizens several times how they assess the Federal Government’s efforts to support Ukraine. Compared to the last survey in January 2024, the proportion of those who consider the level of support for Ukraine to be “just right” has fallen by eight percent (47 percent at the time). At the same time, the proportion of those who criticize the federal government for not having enough commitment to Ukraine has increased (26 percent at the time). The proportion of people who wanted more effort also grew (23 percent at the time).

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute forsa on behalf of RTL Deutschland on February 23 and 26, 2024. Database: 1,009 respondents. Statistical margin of error: +/- 3 percentage points.
