RTX Remix: a good idea… if used correctly © NVIDIA

The mods around RTX Remix are multiplying with small pearls and projects less respectful of the original material.

More than a year after the first announcements, it was on January 23 that NVIDIA decided to open its RTX Remix platform to the public through what the brand still calls a “ open beta “.

Thanks to RTX Remix, it is possible to exploit ray tracing and artificial intelligence to restore color to the old glories of video games, for the better, but also sometimes, for the worse.

New textures, new effects

Of course, NVIDIA spared no effort and thus widely highlighted the work around Portal with RTX And Protal: Prelude RTXwhich were respectively launched in December 2022 and July 2023.

Nothing to complain about, the result on both projects is very impressive and we feel that the work did not simply consist of adding a few poorly placed lighting effects. However, alongside these two remarkable examples, it didn’t take long to discover more… strange things.

Thus, the drop in the number of images per second when RTX Remix is used is sometimes obvious. This is particularly the case on the RTX Remix mod from Max Payne where with a GeForce RTX 4080, we go from 900 to 1400 images per second at more or less 65 fps!

Respect for the original work

After all, adding such intensive graphic effects is not without pain, but the most annoying thing is rather the lack of respect for the original work.

If the result is nevertheless interesting, we were able to discover the mod of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas with its “blue” flat areas on certain parts of the city. More recently, it is the mod Need for Speed Most Wanted which is disturbing. We cannot deny the efforts made, but we no longer have the impression of playing in the same capacity.

Not necessarily to everyone’s taste, the tones of the original game gave it a particular atmosphere, evacuated by the RTX Remix mod. Colors are way too bright today and cars lose these gradients for a tasteless uniform look.

These are only two examples in full development, but the trend is there and mods with dubious results are multiplying. Let’s hope that it’s just something new and that things get back to normal quickly.
