There is really enough to tear your hair out. While the Oyomen had the opportunity to overtake Bayonne in the standings, they missed their chance this Friday evening in Mathon, after their defeat against Provence Rugby (16-20).
They had a golden opportunity, but the Haut-Bugistes let it pass… Defeated the day before in Carcassonne, Bayonne offered Oyonnax the possibility of overtaking them in the standings, and thus to glimpse the hope of finishing second, synonymous with semi-final in Mathon. Except that things didn’t quite go as planned… Quickly taken by the challenge, Oyonnax wasted cartridges but above all, let Provence Rugby wander in attack. Result: the visitors scored three tries in the first half (6-17 at intermission).
A wave of whistled penalties
More in the legs on returning from the locker room, Oyonnax however struggled to score. It took until the 69th for the Hauts-Bugistes to find a little smile, thanks to Darren Sweetnam’s corner try, found on the wing (14-20, then 16-20 thanks to the transformation). Provence Rugby, long in the Oyonnax camp in the last ten minutes, did not take advantage of it. Oyonnax benefited from a final touch in the 79th, but wasted his opportunity to ignite Mathon. Defeat 16-20.
