Rule “clearly without the CDU”: SPD leader Esken against further GroKo

The political era in Germany with Chancellor Merkel will end in a few months. If SPD leader Esken has its way, that is not the only thing that should change after the federal election: She also wants to bury a cooperation with the CDU – and distributes it against the coalition partner that is still in the coalition.

The federal chairman of the SPD, Saskia Esken, currently sees no basis for further cooperation with the CDU. With a view to the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and the federal election, she said on the news radio MDR Aktuell (Halle) that the CDU is not only in Saxony-Anhalt, but also in the federal government without any orientation, without any compass. In the party, important directional decisions are pending, which have not yet been passed. The position of the CDU on the AfD is still unclear. The SPD is striving for a progressive government in the federal government. “That means clearly without the CDU,” Esken told the broadcaster.

In the opinion of the SPD chairmen, the achievements of the social democrats in the coalitions at state and federal level have become too little visible. “This is the phenomenon of co-government, the so-called junior partner, that we see again and again,” she said. That is why it must be emphasized more clearly that it makes a difference if the SPD co-governs.

In Halle, the SPD leader wants to take part in actions of the alliance #unteilbar Sachsen-Anhalt today. The association of initiatives, associations, trade unions and private individuals is committed against right-wing extremism and for a democratic, solidary and diverse society.
