LONDON (Reuters) – Russian opponent Yevgeny Roizman was arrested at his home, a video released on social media on Wednesday shows, in which the former mayor of Yekaterinburg claims that his arrest was due to his denunciation of the war in Ukraine. .
On this video, we can see members of the security forces take away Evgueni Roizman and hear the latter declare to journalists that he is the subject of an investigation opened within the framework of the law punishing insults to the army.
Evgueni Roizman says he was arrested “basically for one sentence, ‘the invasion of Ukraine'”.
Asked where he said that, he replied, “I said it everywhere and I say it now.”
Yekaterinburg’s security services confirmed the reason for the arrest, saying the opponent was being investigated for “discrediting the Russian military”, according to the TASS news agency.
The offence, newly introduced after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, carries a prison sentence of up to five years.
Russia describes its intervention in Ukraine as a “special military operation”.
