WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Tuesday criticized Russia for failing to meet its obligations under the New START nuclear weapons treaty, which includes inspections in both countries, and warned that the viability of the pact was thus “threatened”.

A spokesman for the US State Department said that “Russia’s refusal to facilitate inspection activities prevents the United States from exercising an important right under the treaty”.

This “threatens the viability of nuclear arms control between the United States and Russia,” the spokesperson added in a statement, stressing that Washington remained willing to work with Moscow on the full implementation of the New START treaty.

Talks between the two countries about resuming inspections were due to take place last November in Egypt, but Russia pushed them back, and no date has since been set for the meeting.
