In this podcast episode:

By the end of October, Ramzan Kadyrov has had enough. In an audio message on his Telegram channel, he describes Colonel General Alexander Lapin as a failure. Kadyrov accuses the highly decorated general of being far away from the front lines in Ukraine and of having caused a breakthrough by the Ukrainian opponents. A few days later, Moscow deposed Lapin as Russian commander in Ukraine.

At first sight, Ramzan Kadyrov’s criticism caught the eye of Moscow. The head of the Russian republic of Chechnya is considered one of the most ardent propagandists of the war. Since the Russian army has been on the defensive in Ukraine, he hasn’t held back on criticism either. So is he the new strongman in Russia who can even challenge Putin’s authority?

In the new episode of “NZZ Akzent”, Russia correspondent Markus Ackeret introduces the tyrannical ruler of Chechnya and explains why Kadyrov’s concentrated criticism fits President Putin’s stuff.
