KYIV (Reuters) – Russia launched a missile and drone attack on six regions of Ukraine early on Wednesday, causing an industrial site to catch fire, damaging residential buildings and injuring several people, according to local authorities.

The Ukrainian army said it had shot down five of the six missiles and all 24 drones fired overnight by Russia.

Ukrainian defense systems destroyed all air weapons approaching Kyiv, Serhiy Popko, head of the military administration of the Ukrainian capital, said on the Telegram application.

The debris, however, damaged an industrial facility in the Kyiv region and caused a fire, the region’s governor said.

The attack injured a resident and damaged a private residence, a garage, a gas station and a storage site, he added.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the attack injured three people and damaged nine private residences, the local governor said, adding that the Ukrainian army had shot down 11 drones over the region.

Warning sirens sounded for several hours throughout Ukraine, including in regions bordering NATO member Poland.

Polish and allied aircraft were activated as a precaution, the operational command of the Polish Armed Forces said on Platform X. This is regularly the case when Russia launches an air attack on the western regions of Ukraine.
