Russia says it invited UN experts to investigate Olenivka

July 30 (Reuters) – Russia has invited United Nations and Red Cross experts to investigate the circumstances of the deaths of dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war on Friday in Olenivka prison, located in the region of Donetsk is ruled by pro-Russian separatists, Russia’s Defense Minister said on Sunday.

In a press release, the latter said he had taken this initiative “in the interest of conducting an objective investigation”.

The separatists accuse the Ukrainian army of having bombarded the prison using American HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and announced a death toll of 53.

Ukraine denies any responsibility and accuses the Russian army of having pounded the prison to conceal the ill-treatment inflicted on the detainees. (Report David Ljunggren, French version Jean-Stphane Brosse)
