MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian forces have advanced west after taking control of the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

They also destroyed Ukrainian weapons supplied by Western countries over the past week, including seven Storm Shadow cruise missiles from the United Kingdom, a US Patriot anti-aircraft missile and its launch vehicle, as well as 42 HIMARS rocket launchers, added the ministry.

Reuters was unable to independently verify this information.

Last week, Russian forces’ conquest of the town of Avdiivka, located in eastern Ukraine, marked Russia’s first significant gain since the capture of the town of Bakhmut in May 2023.

After the capture of Avdiivka, the units of the “Center” group of Russian forces “continued to advance in the West direction,” according to the Defense Ministry press release.

“In cooperation with aviation and artillery, they defeated (…) troops and equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces” in six neighboring localities, it is specified.
