MOSCOW, March 7 (Reuters) – Russian security services (FSB) said on Thursday they had shot dead a Belarusian suspect who was planning “an act of terrorism” in Karelia, in northwest Russia, on behalf of the Ukraine, reports the RIA news agency.
The FSB said it had “seized weapons and an improvised explosive device” (IED) after the suspect was neutralized.
The man wanted to blow up an administrative building in Olonets, about 250 kilometers from the border with Finland, according to RIA, citing Russian security services.
“During the arrest, the criminal used a firearm against the security officers and was neutralized,” the FSB said.

The IED, he adds, was designed with an American-made detonator and British-made plastic.
Russian media, citing unidentified sources, report that the alleged attacker was a 49-year-old activist from Belarus who had participated in 2020 protests against President Alexander Lukashenko in the former Soviet republic. (Reuters report, French version Sophie Louet, edited by Blandine Hénault)
