(Updated with attack on the port of Izmail)

Aug 2 (Reuters) – Russian-led drone attacks hit the city of Kyiv and the port of Izmail in the Odessa region on Wednesday, damaging grain silos, Ukrainian officials said.

In Kyiv, the units responsible for anti-aircraft defense repelled a drone attack early Wednesday, said Vitali Klitchko, the mayor of the capital, on Telegram.

Vitali Klitchko and Serhi Popko, head of the military administration, said in separate messages that debris from drones fell on the capital, but no casualties.

A drone attack was also carried out in the early hours of Wednesday in Odessa, where silos containing grain were targeted, the region’s governor, Oleh Kiper, announced on Telegram.

Drone attacks have also been reported in Izmail, a port on the Danube that has become essential for the export of Ukrainian grain.

A grain silo was damaged in the port of Izmail, in the Odessa region, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on the X platform, formerly Twitter. “Ukrainian cereals have the potential to feed millions of people around the world,” iol added.

“The biggest (damage) is in the south of the country. Russian terrorists have once again attacked ports, cereals and global food security,” Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said on Telegram.

Russia is stepping up its attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure after refusing to extend the Black Sea grain deal that allows the export of Ukrainian grain.
