Russian gas: London bets on nuclear and wind power at sea


Boris Johnson is reviewing its energy strategy to reduce dependence on Russia.

Six weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, Prime Minister Boris Johnson presented his roadmap on Thursday to reduce energy dependence on the United Kingdom, a major importer of gas and electricity. In 2021, gas imports notably increased by 30% compared to 2020.

Even if the country imports only 8% of Russian gas – it mainly supplies Norwegian gas – the war leads the conservative government to review its strategy. At the beginning of March, London had indeed announced that it would put an end to imports of Russian gas by the end of the year.

Surprisingly, the plan unveiled by Boris Johnson does not contain any measures likely to quickly ensure greater energy autonomy for the British, nor to reduce their gas and electricity bills, which have just jumped by at least 54%. The head of the Conservative government is betting on the construction of new nuclear power stations – which would make it possible to triple the production of nuclear energy…
