  • Russian Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny has turned 47.
  • People around the world therefore took to the streets on Sunday to demonstrate for his release.
  • More than 100 people have been arrested in Russia.

On the occasion of the 47th birthday of the imprisoned Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny, people around the world demonstrated for his release. Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Jarmysch, published photos of rallies in Russia, Germany, Japan, Australia and Georgia on Twitter.

According to the civil rights organization OVD-Info, more than 100 people were arrested in 23 cities during rallies in Russia.

Navalny, the most prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sentenced to nine years in prison two years ago for alleged fraud. Previously, he had barely survived an attack with a nerve agent.

In a tweet from the prison camp, the opposition politician thought about his birthday and his work. He is in a good mood, although he cannot be with his family. Life works in such a way that “social progress and a better future can only be achieved if a certain number of people are willing to pay the price for the right to have an opinion.”
