The Air Force has risen to 27 alert launches over the Baltic States since August last year. The German crews in their Eurofighter combat aircraft identified Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea, said a spokesman for the Luftwaffe in Berlin. The Eurofighters are alerted when unknown aircraft without a transponder signal or radio contact are in the Baltic airspace.

More than 150 German soldiers have been stationed in Estonia since the summer of 2022 to protect the airspace in this area of NATO’s eastern flank. On Wednesday, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wants to get an idea of the mission at the Ämari air force base in Estonia. Since March 6, German and British Eurofighters – in Great Britain the machines are called Typhoon – have been flying jointly and as a “Quick Reaction Alert” armed protective flights over the Baltic States and the adjacent international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

The usual formation of two consists of a British and a German Eurofighter. The integration has been promoted on the initiative of the Air Force since 2019 with the Eurofighter nations Great Britain, Spain and Italy.
