Ryzen 7 5800X3D: Significantly cooler without a heat spreader

With the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, manufacturer AMD offers a very special processor: In addition to well-known technology, the company has given the CPU a 3D V-Cache, which serves as an additional L3 cache. In suitable applications, this cache provides a significant increase in speed. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D can also flex its muscles in games. However, the unusual design has its price: AMD accommodates the 3D V-Cache above the actual CPU. This makes it harder for the heat generated to dissipate.

CPU without heat build-up

However, resourceful hobbyists have now found out that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D runs at significantly lower temperatures without a processor cover (heat spreader). To do this, the metal cover and the solder underneath must be removed and replaced with liquid metal. The Twitter user

was able to significantly reduce the temperature of his decapitated Ryzen 7 5800X3D in this way.

11 degrees less

As a test run, the Twitter user used the racing game “Forza Horizon 5”, the CPU was cooled by a Noctua NH-D14. Despite only one case fan, the CPU temperature was 67 degrees Celsius after the conversion and thus 11 degrees Celsius lower than with the original heat spreader. As a result, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can hold its maximum clock longer. However, hobbyists should keep in mind that such a conversion inevitably voids the warranty and is also associated with a risk of defects when the CPU is beheaded.

For gamers and content creators

But even without this conversion, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is already a first-class CPU for PC gamers. The additional L3 cache also has a positive effect when producing music or videos with many tracks.
