One day, no doubt, graphics cards of Chinese origin will be at the level of models signed AMD/NVIDIA… but not right away.
There is no doubt about the rise of China’s semiconductor industry. In the more specific field of graphics processors too, Chinese companies are making progress.
However, the most prominent of them still remains a good – even very good – distance from the big names in the sector and the most recent APUs from AMD have a large lead.
GPUs making clear progress over a year…
For more than two years now, the Chinese company Moore Threads has regularly made headlines thanks to its graphics processors. Their increase in power is indisputable and, last year, the S80, for example, successfully passed the “ But can it run Crysis? “.
More symbolic than anything else – Crysis is a game from 2009! – this test aims to highlight the progress made by Chinese companies in an area that has until now been the preserve of the United States. At the start of the year, a major update to the Moore Threads drivers also greatly boosted the performance of the S80.
Depending on the games concerned, 240.50 drivers provide performance up to 2.5 times higher than 211.30, released at the time of the card’s release. Moore Threads is therefore clearly gaining credibility even if there is still a long way to go.
…but still very far, even from AMD APUs
In order to gauge the performance of Moore Threads cards and not be satisfied with feedback from Chinese media, ComputerBase collected an S80 as well as the small S30 recently highlighted for its ability to decode AV1 without breaking the bank (barely 55 dollars ).
The two cards were measured and compared to the entry-level from AMD (Radeon RX 6400) or NVIDIA (GeForce GTX 1650). More importantly, both cards were also compared to AMD’s latest APUs, the Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 8700G. Unfortunately for Moore Threads, we see that the road is still really long.
In all cases, the MTT S80 accompanied by a Ryzen 7 5800X is well behind when it agrees to launch the game. Thus, Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo IV Or Ratchet & Clank refused to start. On the others, DOTA 2 has Baldur’s Gate 3 Passing by Year 1800 Or Counter-Strike 2there is no match.
The MTT S80 is three times less powerful than the GeForce GTX 1650 and even AMD APUs do much better: the MTT S80 is 50% slower than the 8700G and 40% slower than the 8600G. This despite a much higher consumption (255 watts of TDP) and we will not even talk about the case of the S30 which is not intended for video games.
The delay from the company Moore Threads therefore remains significant while its GPUs still do not support DirectX 12. Of course, we will still be attentive to the future progress of the brand.
