Sabine Weiss: death of a legendary photographer



Lhe Franco-Swiss photographer Sabine Weiss, a leading representative of the French humanist school, died Tuesday at her home in Paris at the age of 97. Born in Switzerland in 1924 and naturalized French in 1995, she lived in Paris where she had set up her studio on Boulevard Murat since 1949.

Winner of the Women in Motion photography prize in 2020, officially awarded in Arles in 2021, the woman for whom a good photo should “touch, be well composed and stripped down” marked the history of photography. It has also been the subject of some 160 exhibitions around the world.

Like Doisneau, Boubat, Willy Ronis or Izis, she had immortalized the simple life of people, but had never claimed any influence. A pioneer of post-war photography, she was …
