The safety razor is a beauty tool that has its origins in the men’s world. Wet razors have been used there for decades. Which is why planing shaves are now also popular with women many compelling reasons.
What is a safety razor?
Safety razors are timeless classics of wet shaving. They are currently experiencing an upswing and have developed into a trend, especially among environmentally conscious people. The razors, mostly made of stainless steel, not only look elegant, they are one too environmentally friendly, plastic-free alternative to system razors. Since safety razors promise a clean shave without cutting injuries, they are also often referred to as safety razor designated. To ensure this safety, however, the razor blades must be changed regularly.
How does a safety razor work?
Basically, a safety razor consists of four parts. First, there is the handpiece. A blade cover, the blade holder and the razor blade are then screwed to this. The razor blade protrudes only minimally. Cuts therefore have almost no chance – provided you use the safety razor correctly. While disposable razors or other conventional system razors want to convince you that they have several blades, the safety razor reliably removes your body hair with just a single razor blade.
What types of safety razors are there?
Safety razors can be roughly divided into two types: Models with open comb as well as those with closed comb. Incidentally, the term comb roughly describes the point at which the skin comes into contact with the razor blade. If you can’t see it with the naked eye, the packaging says which model it is.
- Open Comb: On Safety razor with an open comb is not recommended for leg shaving. As the name suggests, the blade is less concealed here. The shave is more thorough, but the risk of injury increases. A model with an open comb is therefore more suitable for beard shaving, especially with heavy beard growth.

- Handle: If you are new to razor shaving, you should take a closer look at the handle length of the safety razor. At best, choose a model with a short handle. This allows the razor to be controlled easily, or to glide over the skin at the right angle with appropriate pressure.
- Weight: When it comes to the weight of a safety razor, opinions differ. Many prefer heavy models because in this case you don’t have to exert a lot of pressure yourself. Others, however, find heavy safety razors annoying because the arm tires more quickly. So let’s summarize: A safety razor shouldn’t be too light, but it shouldn’t be too heavy either.
- Blade change: Like conventional system razors, the safety razor also has interchangeable blades. Unlike system razors, however, the entire razor head is not disposed of. The head of the safety razor is unscrewed from the handle. The razor blade will detach and a replacement blade can be inserted. Application: How to use a safety razor?

Safety razor vs. system razor: which is better?
All in all, it can be said that the safety razor is a few steps ahead of the system razor in terms of efficiency, costs and sustainability and is no longer only reserved for men. But that doesn’t mean that razor shaving is for everyone. If you are not a fan of shaving, but prefer other types of hair removal, then the safety razor will not be for you either. However, if you use a multi-blade razor, it might be worth switching to a safety razor.
