Safran: 1st flight of an NH90 with sustainable fuel

(CercleFinance.com) – Safran announces today that Safran Helicopter Engines, along with TotalEnergies and Airbus Helicopters, supported the French Armaments Directorate (DGA) in conducting the first test flight of an NH90 helicopter , during which one of its two RTM322 engines ran on sustainable aviation fuel (CAD).

The sustainable fuel was produced by TotalEnergies from used cooking oils using HEFA (Hydrotreating Oils and Fats) technology.

It has a carbon footprint four times smaller than that of a fuel of fossil origin, thus meeting the criterion of a 65% reduction required by the EU for low-carbon fuels.

Carried out on February 3, this test flight “starts a dynamic of decarbonization within the armies with the ambition of gradually reducing the share of fossil fuels in the operations of military helicopters”, analyzes Christian Caneilles, Director of Heavy Helicopter Engines programs at Safran Helicopter Engines.
