Saft: supplies batteries for six MTG satellites

(CercleFinance.com) – Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, supplies qualified lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for the space applications of six satellites, the first of which entered service in December 2022.

Saft thus contributes to greater accuracy of weather forecasts through the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite program.

The new MTG satellites will provide ten times more data to EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) than the previous generation.

In turn, weather forecasting organizations in Europe and Africa will be able to improve the accuracy and timeliness of severe weather warnings to save lives and limit economic damage.

Saft’s VES16 batteries were chosen to ensure power continuity for periods of up to 72 minutes per day when the Earth eclipses the Sun, interrupting the production of electricity from photovoltaic solar panels.

“Continuity of power is essential to ensure a constant and uninterrupted flow of weather forecast data from the MTG satellites,” explains Flavio Murolo, Director of Meteosat Satellite Operations. As Saft supplied the batteries for the first and second generation satellites, its technology has proven itself over more than 45 years with EUMETSAT, with superior performance, reliability and lifespan. ‘
