SAG Awards: triumph for Coda, the adaptation of The Bélier Family, disappointment for The Power of the Dog

The Franco-American drama won Best Cast and Best Supporting Actor. Jane Campion’s 12-time Oscar-nominated western leaves empty-handed.

In Santa Monica, California, the 28and SAG Awards ceremony has just rewarded its winners. Since its inception in 1995, it has become one of the most accurate accolades in the film industry, as well as a good barometer in view of the Oscars. The 13 statuettes are donated by the union of American actors, constituting the most numerous college – around 10,000 – within the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences.

The independent film Coda (acronym for “Child of deaf adults”, “child of deaf parents”), which tells the story of a deaf family in difficulty, won the first prize at the SAG Awards. Adapted from The Aries Family by Éric Lartigau produced in 2014, the viewer follows Ruby, a high school student, who juggles between her musical ambitions and her family’s dependence on her to communicate with the world of hearing people. The feature is available on Apple TV+ after outbidding at the Sundance independent film festival last year, where it brought in a record $25 million.

“We deaf actors have come a long way”said, in sign language, Marlee Matlin, the mother of Ruby on the screen, visibly amazed as she received, alongside the other actors of the film, the statuette of the flagship category “best cast”. “It confirms the fact that we deaf actors can work like anyone else”, she added, before teaching the public the sign for “I love you”. Actor Troy Kotsur, who plays Ruby’s father, won Best Supporting Actor. He thanked the directors for having “believing in us, deaf actors, and for having chosen us in an authentic way”.

No statuette for The Power of the Dog and Belfast

It was a glorious evening for Will Smith, who won Best Actor for King Richard . The biopic chronicles the incredible rise of Serena and Venus Williams, from the rough streets of Compton to the most prestigious tennis courts in the discipline. Will Smith embodies the role of their father Richard, whose he praised the “power of conviction that borders on madness and sometimes goes beyond the limit – something absolutely necessary to take something from the impossible to the possible”.

The Best Actress award went to Jessica Chastain for her role in In the eyes of Tammy Fayewhere she plays the eccentric eponymous American televangelist. “It was a dream for me to play Tammy Faye”said the actress. “She was a true pioneer and she wrapped her arms around those who were repeatedly rejected”referring to the LGBTQ community.

The two feature films given as favorites at the Oscars, The Power of the Dog and Belfast left the ceremony empty-handed, reshuffling the cards in view of the race for the Oscars, expected on March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. On the television side, the actors of Squid Game , Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, won Best Actor and Best Actress. The two South Koreans thanked Hollywood for having them “open the door”.
