Sailing: A young Tunisian sailor dies in training

Tunisia is in shock. Eya Guezguez, a young 17-year-old sailor, died of drowning on Sunday during training with the national team.

The teenager had participated last summer in the Tokyo Olympics with her twin sister Sarra. They were the youngest athletes in the competition. A few months later, after finishing at the 21and placed in the 49er FX category, they trained diligently, particularly in view of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

And it was during one of these training sessions that the tragedy occurred. While the two sisters were at sea, their boat capsized due to strong winds. Eya drowned, while Sarra was rescued and survived. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact causes of the accident.

“I am shocked by the news of the death of navigator Eya Guezguez. She was an inspiring talent and role model for her generation. Her participation in Tokyo 2020 alongside her twin sister Sarra will continue to inspire young girls around the world. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the Tunisian Olympic community,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement.
