From the Middle Ages to the middle of the 19th century, the succession was regulated by the so-called primogeniture. Accordingly, the eldest son in the family was given preference at the expense of the younger ones and anyway the daughters. However, as early as the 14th and 15th centuries it was possible to structure the succession differently. In some countries, such as France, primogeniture was primarily reserved for noble families in order to preserve the integrity of dominions and possessions. The bourgeoisie imitated this practice in the course of its social advancement.
