The Oculus Rift S does not revolutionize absolutely anything compared to the first Rift of the name; but while waiting for the true new generation of virtual reality headsets for PCs, it stands out from the competition by establishing itself as the most practical and pleasant to use headset on the market. If certain technological choices can certainly be debated, insofar as they sometimes sacrifice some of the strengths of the original Rift to make room for others, the compromises made are on the whole rational and relevant. Right now, it’s the safest choice for anyone looking to get started in PC VR.

Strong points

  • One of the most comfortable VR headsets.
  • Very simple and quick initial setup.
  • True roomscale without external sensors, with only one occupied USB port.
  • Very reliable motion tracking.
  • Almost no grid effect.
  • Very attenuated luminous halo effects.
  • Oculus Touch controllers included, efficient and very pleasant to handle.
  • Excellent quality mini-jack output.
  • The most complete VR ecosystem on PC.

Weak points

  • No more physical adjustment of the pupillary distance.
  • Small traces of chromatic aberrations.
  • No built-in headphones, only modest performance mini speakers.
  • The almost perfect blacks of the Oled are regretted.
