Sales more than doubled: BMW is gaining momentum with e-cars

Sales more than doubled
BMW is really getting going with e-cars

Things went well for BMW in the summer: After several weak quarters, sales almost reached the level of the previous year. The electrical division in particular is booming: the car manufacturer has almost doubled sales here.

The Munich carmaker BMW sold almost as many cars in the summer quarter as it did a year ago – also thanks to an increase in electric cars. From July to September, 587,795 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars were delivered, the company said. That is 0.9 percent less than a year ago. However, the minus is much smaller than in the previous quarters, when lockdowns in China and the lack of chips made things difficult for the company.

The BMW core brand saw a decline of 1.4 percent to 517,689 vehicles, while the Mini brand grew by 2.4 percent to 68,596 vehicles. Since the beginning of the year, a good 1.7 million vehicles have gone to their new owners, 9.5 percent fewer than a year ago.

There was a strong upward trend for electric cars: BMW sold a good 52,000 vehicles here, more than twice as many (121.6 percent) as a year ago. This year, by the end of September, there were a total of 128,000 all-electric vehicles. Including hybrid-powered cars, sales of electrified cars in the three months were 98,821 units, up 26.2 percent.

The company is on track to meet sales targets for 2022, said sales chief Pieter Nota. The Munich-based company assumes that sales for the year as a whole will be just below the previous year’s level.

Business was good for BMW in the summer quarter, especially in Asia: 5.7 percent more cars were delivered in China than a year ago. The Munich company also recorded a plus in the USA. In Europe, on the other hand, deliveries fell by 11.1 percent.
