Saliva test to detect endometriosis: a real revolution?

Yasmina Kattou

A saliva test has just been developed by a Lyon company. It detects endometriosis by sequencing the microRNAs present in saliva. Endometriosis affects 10% of women in France and is difficult to detect today. The delay for making a diagnosis is still six to eight years. Will this new test be a game-changer?

The Endotest is the first saliva test to diagnose endometriosis, this gynecological disease which affects 10% of women in France. It was developed by the French start-up Ziwig and the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians. The diagnosis for endometriosis could be made in just a few days, compared to several years today. All thanks to this saliva test that you can do at home. A small amount of saliva in a tube is enough. The kit is then sent by post for analysis.

An almost 100% reliable test

The results will be delivered during a consultation with a doctor. Innovation possible thanks to new technologies, explains Professor Philippe Descamps. He is responsible for the endometriosis center at the University Hospital of Angers. “There are somewhat special biomarkers called microRNAs. There are approximately 2,600 per individual. Thanks to these new generation techniques, sequencing and artificial intelligence have revealed 109 microRNAs which are involved in endometriosis. And this is what has been highlighted in saliva and which makes it possible to make the diagnosis”, he explains at the microphone of Europe 1.

This test, which is almost 100% reliable, is not yet available for sale. The researchers wish to obtain reimbursement for the kit from Social Security. Negotiations are ongoing.
