The 105th Mayors’ Show of France opened on Tuesday under the theme of “Communities under attack, Republic under threat”. In parallel with this event, Emmanuel Macron will receive on Wednesday evening at the Élysée nearly a thousand elected officials who have several grievances to convey to him.

Upset mayors. The 105th Mayors of France Show is marked by heavy news for the mayors of France. Local elected officials have been confronted with increasing violence for several months and often feel isolated in the face of the issues they have to manage. A situation which explains the theme chosen for this gathering: “Communities attacked, Republic threatened”. Emmanuel Macron will be absent from the show, due to G20, but he will receive nearly a thousand elected officials at the Élysée on Wednesday evening.

A meeting that the mayors are waiting for in order to send messages to the Head of State. Elected officials from the countryside will also want to make themselves heard. This is the case of Jean-François Sans, mayor of Carla-Bayle in Ariège, who depicts a national policy unsuitable for his territory. “I hope that Emmanuel Macron will be more attentive to the problems of the rural world where we are a little isolated,” the elected official told Europe 1. “A law that applies to the city does not apply to rural areas in the same way,” adds a participant at the show.

Mayors ask for help with local problems

In the municipalities they lead, mayors are on the front lines to resolve all the issues facing their fellow citizens. Several elected officials are asking the state for help to resolve local issues. “I am in marine submersion, we can no longer build in my town. I have been promised to raise my dike for 12 years,” explains a mayor.

In addition to state aid, mayors are demanding more autonomy in their functions. “Liberate the action of mayors and give us back control over our actions and our abilities to do. Above all, we must trust us to organize the ecological transition and give residents the opportunity to express themselves,” calls for another elected official. The mayors will be able to speak on Wednesday evening at the Élysée. An opportunity for the president to heal the divide that has been created since 2017 between him and his councilors.
