Salzburg’s lakes – natural bathing in the foothills of the Vorderkaserklamm

If a gorge lures with natural bathing, then it does not necessarily have to be a bath in the lake. A detour to the Vorderkaser Gorge in St. Martin near Lofer.

In hot temperatures, cooling down is the best antidote. If there is no lake far and wide, there are other options. A trip to the outdoor pool is always possible, as is a trip to one of the Salzburg gorges. Especially for people who shy away from swimming. If you want to combine a visit to the gorge and splashing about in the water, the Vorderkaserklamm in St. Martin near Lofer is the right place for you. The Ödenbach, which cuts deep into the mountain here, created the gorge not far from the state border between Salzburg and Tyrol. It has been open to the public since 1882. Footbridges and stairs lead through the incision in the Loferer Steinberge. It takes about an hour to walk from the entrance to the gorge over the course of the stream. The Ödenbach also has its charm when it flows from the interior of the mountain into the Schiedergraben. There he makes his way in the direction of the Saalachtal. Smaller pools and bays open up again and again along the stream bed. Die-hards can put their feet in the mountain stream there. But three ponds officially invite you to swim along the Ödenbach. Bathing fun for young and old Just a few minutes’ walk after the parking lot on Pinzgauer Straße, a suspension bridge leads to the other side of the valley. Two of the small bathing areas are set up there. Right at the first pond two rafts are waiting to be boarded. A true water paradise for children. But even adults are said to have felt like pirates there. Those who continue the hike will find a second pond with two wooden rafts just a little further on. The actual destination, away from the gorge and the natural bathing area, is the Vorderkaser snack bar. 2.5 kilometers from the parking lot. Landlords Manfred and Katharina have been running the excursion inn since 2015. Open from May to October. Locals come with their mountain bikes, tourists stop off after visiting the gorge. But everyone agrees: Voderkaser has the best Kaiserschmarrn in Salzburg. “Kaiserschmarrn is also a hit in summer” “Kaiserschmarrn is also our hit in summer,” explains landlord Manfred Ebser. Yes, this is also the case in warm temperatures. Maybe because the classic winter dessert in the Vorderkaser is served with fresh fruit. This tastes great and small. Always.
