Samsung already at work on its “custom” SoC dedicated to the Galaxy S

Just like Apple with its A chips, Samsung would like to develop an exclusive SoC for all of its high-end smartphones. But we will have to be patient, development is probably only at an early stage.

Despite the promise of stunning performance, the recent Galaxy S22 range has been rather disappointing, at least the models equipped with the Exynos 2200 chip, designed in partnership with AMD. The South Korean firm has not arranged its affairs by deliberately restricting its power on certain apps in order to reserve it for those of benchmark. Fortunately, the brand quickly rolled out an update allowing its customers to manage the optimization of their product themselves.

Last month, we learned that Samsung was studying the design of a new SoC with in-house cores for the years to come. The president of Samsung Electronics, TM Roh, had indeed declared that it was necessary to develop “a PA [pour Application Processor, une puce habituellement destinée au système d’exploitation, NDLR] specifically designed for its Galaxy smartphones”.

The Exynos 2200 is certainly an in-house chip, but it is mainly used on high-end European smartphones. The firm would like this time to harmonize things by integrating it into all its premium mobiles, allowing it to also be less dependent on the American Qualcomm (and its Snapdragon chips).

A double hit

The very serious Business Korea confirms this information and specifies that the new SoC with “custom” cores, cut for specific hardware, should not be integrated into smartphones before 2025. The media indicates that Samsung teams are however already at work on the chip.

The firm said it wanted to accelerate the establishment of an ecosystem entirely based on this new processor, and no longer on those of MediaTek or Qualcomm. This would notably make it possible to offer increased performance and a more generous autonomy, but this type of design takes time.

The newspaper tells us that the interest of this project is twofold for the South Korean. The division linked to Product Solutions (Device Solutions) must continue to maintain its rank in the semiconductor market, while that dedicated to the software experience must increase its market share in the premium segment, currently dominated by Apple. Facilitating the bridges between the two worlds via a common material would allow the company to better focus on these two goals, while strengthening the ecosystem of high-end Galaxy products. This is a real gamble, but some Chinese players like Oppo have already decided to do the same.

This does not mean the end of the Exynos. Indeed, the South Korean hopes to continue to use it on the entry and mid-range, which represent a very important part of its overall sales. This is for example the case of the recent Galaxy A33 or the M33, both equipped with the Exynos 1280.
