Sony is introducing its new top smartphone, the Xperia 1 VI. Its zoom capabilities put the top models from Samsung and Xiaomi in the shade.

After Samsung and Xiaomi, Sony is now the next Android manufacturer to show its new top smartphone for 2024. The Sony phone is called the Xperia 1 VI and is said to be particularly notable for its camera. The zoom capabilities are particularly striking. According to Sony, the zoom lens should offer a focal length of up to 170 millimeters. For comparison: the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra achieves a maximum focal length of 115 millimeters, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra a focal length of 120 millimeters.

According to Sony, the 12-megapixel telephoto zoom lens should also enable macro shots with around 2x maximum magnification and a minimum focusing distance of 4 cm. Sony is also making a big deal about the built-in 50-megapixel main camera. Here, the Exmor T sensor developed by Sony for mobile devices with AI processing is supposed to provide image quality that corresponds to that of full-frame cameras.

Expected features with two surprises

There are innovations in the display. Sony no longer uses the rather unusual 21:9 format for its top model, but rather the 19.5:9 format also used by other manufacturers. The 6.5-inch screen is an OLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz. However, the resolution is now only Full HD+ and no longer 4K like its predecessor.

The other features correspond to what you would expect from a top smartphone in 2024. The processor is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. The RAM is 12 gigabytes, the device storage 256 gigabytes. The Xperia 1 VI draws power from a 5,000 milliampere hour battery that can be charged from a socket or wirelessly. Android 14 serves as the operating system. Sony promises you three operating system updates (Android 15, 16 and 17) as well as four years of security patches.

What is rather unusual is that Sony still offers you the option of expanding the memory with a microSD card on the Xperia 1 VI. The phone also offers a 3.5 mm jack connection, which other manufacturers have long since removed.

Price and availability

The Sony Xperia 1 VI will be available from June, and pre-orders are already possible. The recommended retail price is 1,399 euros. In Germany, Sony will only offer the 256 gigabyte version. The smartphone is available in the colors “khaki”, “platinum silver” and “goij black”. Anyone who pre-orders the phone will receive the Sony WH-10000XM5 headphones for free until May 31st. These still cost around 290 euros in stores.
