Roll-up screens have been talked about for years. First there was the LG rollable tv who, in 2018, stood out. But now that the market for folding smartphones seems ready to mature, industry players may well pass the second.

Analyst Ross Young, a specialist in screen-related production chains, was able to observe the manufacturer’s progress in this area during an event organized by his company.

The advantages of folding without the constraints?

Of course, it is always a phone concept, and in no case a promise of imminent arrival on the market. But the thing has in any case caught the attention of Ross Young, who shares on his Twitter account some shots.

Samsung calls its technology ” vertical slide-out display “. Concretely, we start from a phone with contained dimensions, offering a 16:9 diagonal screen, which can be “unrolled” by an internal mechanism and makes it possible to obtain a smartphone which looks a lot like the Galaxy Z Flip 3. announced are also the same: we go to a 6.7-inch panel with a 22:9 ratio.

The goal is obviously to enjoy the same advantages as on a folding smartphone (a larger screen) while getting rid of the disadvantages (a thickness that is difficult to assume).

During the Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) event, Ross Young was also able to see the progress of the manufacturer BOE, who demonstrated a “multi-fold” screen and another that can be rolled out horizontally.
