Like the rumors and leaks insisted on thisSamsung today announced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4, respective successors to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Fold 3. No big revolution on the program, but welcome developments as well as a price increase.

Galaxy Z Flip 4: Small advances

Intended for the (wealthy) general public, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is almost identical to its predecessor. However, it is a little less thick when folded, the manufacturer having improved the design of its hinge. It also gains IPX8 certification, a first for a folding smartphone.

The manufacturer announces a “10% improved resistance” and the use of Gorilla Victus + protective glass at the front and back. The external screen retains the same technical characteristics. With a size of 1.9”, it consists of a Super AMOLED panel displaying 260×512 pixels.

It gains in utility since it allows you to respond to messages (quick replies or text dictated by voice), can display more shortcuts and gives access to the main settings (activation/deactivation of Bluetooth, Wifi and airplane mode, for example).

The internal screen retains the dimensions and definition of its predecessor (6.7”, 2640×1080 pixels). It consists of a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel (LTPO technology) and has a refresh rate varying between 1 and 120 Hz.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is built around a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and 8GB of RAM accompanied by 128, 256 or 512GB of non-expandable storage. It has a 3700 mAh battery and benefits from Samsung-style fast charging: 25 Watts wired, 15 Watts by induction.

The main camera consists of two modules: a wide-angle opening at f/1.8 (optical stabilization) and an ultra-wide-angle opening at f/2.2. Both have a 12 Mpxl sensor whose photosites are 30% larger than those of the previous model. The photos must therefore be more precise and less noisy, especially in low light. We will be sure to check all this in a future test.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is available in four colors: Graphite, Blue, Rose Gold and Lavender. If you want to put a little more fantasy, you will have to place an order on the Samsung site and use the Bespoke configurator. You can then create 75 different combinations by mixing the colors of the top and bottom panels as well as that of the hinge.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: Price and availability

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is available for pre-order today, for delivery from August 26. It exists in three versions:

  • 128 GB: 1109 €
  • 256 GB: 1169 €
  • 512 GB: 1289 €

Compared to the Z Flip 3, the 128GB model goes up by €50 and the 256GB by €60 while the 512GB version is new to the new range.

Galaxy Z Fold 4: improved multitasking

Rather oriented towards professional use, the Z Fold 4 can replace a tablet and a smartphone. The newcomer also marks a welcome development rather than a revolution. A little lower but wider than its predecessor (155.1 x 130.1 mm against 158.2 x 128.1 mm), it is also lighter (263 g against 271 g).

Its main screen is built on a 7.6” Dynamic Amoled 2x panel displaying 2176×1812 pixels. It is at the ratio 23.1: 9, quite unusual for a smartphone / tablet. Samsung justifies this choice by explaining that most users of the Fold 3 do not switch the device to landscape mode when viewing a video, making the image less vast… It benefits from an adaptive refresh rate varying between 1 and 120 Hz depending on the application used and a brightness of 1000 nits.

Collateral advantage of this change, the external screen gains in width and becomes closer to that of a conventional smartphone. Also built from a Dynamic Amoled panel, it measures 6.2” diagonally and displays 2316 x 904 pixels. The front camera is still hidden under the slab and becomes less visible than on the Fold 3. It gains in resolution thanks to a 4 Mpxl sensor (against 2 Mpxl for the Fold 3).

As with the Flip 4, the hinge has been refined and the device gains an IPX8 certification. Samsung says the use of Corning Victus+ glass and Armor aluminum increases impact resistance by 10% over the previous model. The hinge is guaranteed for 200,000 openings and closings.

Unsurprisingly, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC is in the game. It is assisted by 12 GB of RAM. The non-expandable storage is 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB depending on the model. On the software side, Android and OneUI are in the game. We note with pleasure that Samsung has integrated a kind of very practical task bar, available as an overlay of an active application. It allows you to easily display up to three applications on the screen. We will come back in detail on this possibility – and many others – in a future test.

Finally, the rear camera consists of three modules: wide-angle (50 Mpxl), Ultra wide-angle (12 Mpxl) and telephoto (10 Mpxl), the latter offering a 3x optical zoom. Again, the sensor technology has been improved to produce better images.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Price and availability

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is available for pre-order today, for delivery starting August 26. It exists in three versions:

  • 256 GB: 1799 €
  • 512 GB: 1919 €
  • 1 TB: €2159

The latter, a novelty in the range, is only available on the Samsung site. The price of the 256 GB version does not show any increase compared to the previous range, the 512 GB version increases by 20 €.
