While flagship smartphones seem to be getting all the attention from observers, the mid-range market has made huge strides over the past two years, thanks to advances in technology and better support for software updates at long term. After spending a few weeks with the new Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, it’s clear that we could still fully function with a mid-range phone (and save hundreds of dollars in the process).

Samsung’s recent public commitment to software updates, including for the Galaxy A53 5G, is a strong reason to consider it, rather than a Google Pixel 5A 5G. Samsung offers a year longer of support than Google, and the Korean giant has already proven over the past two years that it’s serious about timely Android security updates.

While Samsung’s flagship phones are twice as expensive as the A53 5G, the S21 FE only costs around $150 more. For that price, you’ll get a better processor, more cameras, and Samsung DeX, while forgoing a microSD card slot. However, the Galaxy A53 stands out as an excellent option for less than 500 euros… that’s why!

Effective (and cheap)

The Samsung Galaxy A53 has a 6.5-inch Infinity-O AMOLED flat screen. Rarely among smartphones in its range, the device supports a screen refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. A 32 MP front camera is positioned within the screen with adequate minimal bezels on all four sides so you can hold and use the phone with ease. The smartphone has a black plastic bezel, with power and volume buttons on the right, a USB-C port, speaker and microphone on the bottom, and an opening for the microphone on the top . If it does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, it does have a microSD card slot. Something to please the greatest number!

The back of the device has a nice matte finish, which picks up fingerprints, even if they rub off easily. A simple Samsung branding also sits on the back. Four openings for the camera and a flashlight are located on the back, in the upper left corner. The rear panel rises seamlessly from the flat back and around the cameras, giving it a sleek, finished look. Samsung calls this design feature “Ambient Edge”.

Starting from the top left corner and moving down in a column, Samsung offers a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, a 64 MP main camera and a 5 MP depth sensor. There is a 5 MP macro camera with the LED flash below on the right. Camera performance is solid, and I particularly like that the depth sensor supports portrait mode photos without having to back away from the subject. Macro photography is also very successful with the Galaxy A53.

The Samsung Galaxy A53 has a 5000 mAh battery. Combined with the Samsung processor, it offers a worry-free two-day battery life. Wireless charging is certainly absent, but not 25W fast charging (with the right charger). Note that there is no charger included in the box with the Galaxy A53. 5G is supported, even mmWave. Samsung is a leader in this area, and if staying connected in poor coverage areas is important to you, then you should consider a phone from the Korean brand.

A smartphone that has nothing to be ashamed of

Samsung’s phone comes with dual stereo speakers for a decent sound experience – a rarity in the mid-range market. In terms of photography, the Galaxy A53 stands out thanks to a very extensive software dimension. The device has a ton of settings, options, and modes to explore. If you’re looking to save money on a smartphone and want an option that will help you work and play, then the Samsung A53 5G deserves your attention. The comfort of knowing you can rely on years of software updates is a major benefit and something that sets Samsung apart in the mid-range market. Powerful specs, expandable storage, and high-quality build make this phone a go-to.
