In addition to the upcoming flagship Galaxy S22 and the cheaper Galaxy S21 FE, Samsung’s new Galaxy A series is one of the most important smartphone innovations for 2022. Thanks to the speaker Zoutons there is already information on the Galaxy A73. What can we expect from what is possibly the best A-Series model in 2022?
The case of the A73 is almost identical to that of the A72, the surface is matt.
Galaxy A73: Without the weaknesses of the A72?
The Galaxy A72 was the top model of the Galaxy A series in 2021 – at least judging by the model number and size. In terms of camera equipment, it actually set a new record in the A series: For the first time, Samsung installed a real telephoto lens with optical zoom, i.e. triple optical zoom. Meanwhile, the middle-class newcomer Galaxy A52s, which Samsung released almost six months later as an update to the Galaxy A52, was beaten on other points: The A72 lacks the fast 5G cellular technology (presumably for cost reasons) and the Snapdragon 720G processor was not exactly fast. The A52s pushed past here with the faster Snapdragon 778G and 5G. The exciting question: does the A73 remedy these weaknesses?

Samsung A73: That’s the same
Renderings That The Leaker Onleaks and Zoutons have now released, allow a first look at the device: It looks confusingly similar to the predecessor A72, but apparently has narrower display bezels (and therefore smaller external dimensions of 163.8×76.0x7.6 mm). The display is again a large OLED with a 6.7-inch diagonal. The case, here black, has a matt back, so it looks quite valuable despite the plastic. On the back there are again four cameras. The internal memory is once again 128 gigabytes.
Galaxy A73: that’s better
Fans of the big A series can breathe a sigh of relief: According to Zoutons, Samsung will catch up with the A52s in the most important point of its largest A model in 2022. Rumor has it that it contains the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor (with 8 gigabytes of RAM). This is a 5G processor, so the A73 should also be 5G-capable ex works. At the same time, the Snapdragon 750G is a little faster than the Snapdragon 720 in the A72 – how much faster, COMPUTER BILD measured in the test of the Galaxy A52 5G. Nevertheless, it is disappointing that the much faster Snapdragon 778G from the A52s should not be used here. But who knows, so far there is no official information. It is conceivable that the current rumors are wrong.

Galaxy A73: that’s worse
But there is also a deterioration: According to Zoutons, Samsung is removing the jack socket for classic wired headsets and headphones on the A73.
108 megapixel camera
There could be improvements in the camera, at least in the megapixel resolution. According to reports, there is a 128-megapixel sensor in the camera. Hopefully a real telephoto with optical magnification will be on board again.
Charge with up to 33 watts
The battery should again be quite strong (5,000 mAh as in the A72). But rumor has it that Samsung is finally realizing faster charging with up to 33 watts instead of the previous 25 watts. The competition from Xiaomi, for example, already reaches 65 watts even in inexpensive models.
Price and release of the A73
At least in Germany, the Galaxy A73 should appear in January 2022 at the earliest. For the price, Zoutons reckons with 32,999 Indian rupees (Rs), so it’s just below the MSRP – of Rs 34,999 – of the A72. Thus, a price of around 450 euros is realistic for Germany – that is what the predecessor costs in this country.

First assessment: Galaxy A73
Even if Samsung has eliminated the weaknesses of its predecessor, the A73 with 5G should have a hard time on the market. Because the price is only slightly below that of the Galaxy S20 FE. And technically, the Galaxy A52s is possibly still the better choice, at least in terms of speed – and it is cheaper, is currently (as of early December 2021) around 370 euros.
