Samsung Galaxy Flip and Z Fold 4: a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus on the program?

The year 2022 should mark a turning point for the folding smartphone market. As a recent study on the subject points out, Samsung, which has bet big in this area, is today the undisputed leader. But the competition is getting organized and many manufacturers are preparing to offer devices of this type. After presenting its new Galaxy S22s and a good part of its Galaxy A range, the Korean giant is now focusing on its fourth generation of foldable smartphones.

While Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 should be unveiled this summer, one would have thought that Samsung would take the opportunity to highlight its Exynos 2200. However, this SoC, which equips the S22, is far from having is unanimous. Indeed, many media and users have noted performances below expectations, even really disturbing bugs. A disappointment for the company, which had communicated in particular on the graphics part of its chip, based on an AMD RDNA2 architecture with the support of the ray tracing.

The famous leaker Ice Universe estimates that these two smartphones will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus, an overclocked version of the base SoC engraved in 4 nanometers. An unsurprising choice, the Galaxy Z Fold / Flip 3 series having inherited the Snapdragon 888 in 2021.

A third rollable smartphone?

The leaker also touched on the rumor of a third folding model, codenamed “Diamond”. While some think it will be a device capable of folding in three, Ice Universe leans on its side for a smartphone with a rollable screen. The concept of Oppo X 2021 already opted for this impressive and promising design. But no product of this type has yet been launched on the market. Samsung could therefore once again play the pioneers by marketing a new format. However, we will take this information with a grain of salt while waiting for more information…
