Samsung Galaxy phones will (finally) update more easily

It’s a novelty that took its time to arrive. Samsung mobiles are just starting to benefit from the “transparent” updates that Google has implemented since… 2016.

This has probably already happened to you: your phone launches an update and you find yourself faced with an endless loading screen before you can resume normal activity. Well, Samsung has finally decided to make this experience more transparent and less restrictive.

Faster installation of updates

The newly announced Galaxy A55 has indeed just received the first “transparent update” (or “seamless update” in the language of Shakespeare) in the history of Galaxy smartphones. Offered by Google since 2016, this mechanism allows you to install an Android update in a much more practical way by immobilizing the phone for a shorter period of time.

Concretely, this functionality allows a phone to install the new system image on a dedicated partition of disk space and perform all the necessary optimizations in the background. Once the new operating system is installed, the phone reboots to the partition in question, checks that everything is working properly and then deletes the data from the old system. In the event of a problem installing the update, this also allows the mobile to switch back to the old partition and correct any bugs.

The first in a line?

On the Galaxy A55, this results in a two-stage update: a first dedicated to “download and installation» and a second during which the phone operates a “verification” of the system. During all this time, it remains possible to use your phone as if nothing had happened. Users will notice, at worst, that their phone takes a few dozen seconds longer to restart after installing the update.

For the moment, only the Galaxy A55 seems to benefit from this new feature (which was nevertheless inaugurated by Google and integrated into Android in 2016). It is not certain that mobiles already in circulation can benefit from it (even the S24, although the incarnation of ultra high-end at Samsung) since this requires that the phone be configured in a certain way before its release factory. Let’s hope, however, that the Korean manufacturer’s next mobiles adopt this feature, which has the only drawback of requiring a little free space on its memory.
