Smartphone customers do not want to be kept secret. That should actually be clear to every manufacturer. If you spend almost 1,000 euros on a cell phone, then you expect what is advertised. This was not the case with the Samsung Galaxy S22 with the app throttle. This now has serious consequences for Samsung and the providers.
Samsung Galaxy S22: interest drops
South Korea is always a good indicator of whether Samsung has succeeded in making a good smartphone. That’s definitely the case with the Galaxy S22, because the Galaxy S22 Ultra in particular is selling extremely well – at least until recently. After the app throttle became known, the picture has turned. Potential buyers are disappointed and would show much less interest in buying a Samsung Galaxy S22. That’s why the providers have to put together much better offers. Subsidies have more than tripled and are now the equivalent of 370 euros or more per contract (source: Korea Times).
Industry insiders assume that Samsung and the providers have decided to Increase the subsidy so as not to negatively impact sales. After the app throttling became known, potential buyers were very unsettled. They didn’t really know what to make of the concealment, according to SamMobile. In the meantime, Samsung has released an update that can be used to switch off the app throttle, but trust has been permanently damaged. These are just the consequences that Samsung has to deal with.

It remains to be seen whether this subsidy really restores customer confidence. In South Korea, the sales figures were extremely good at the beginning and much better than both predecessors. We’ll see how app throttling affects this in the coming months. Samsung has not earned any trust with this. Incidentally, Xiaomi uses a similar method.
