With the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung has launched the new generation of its own top models. However, the CHIP test laboratory shows that newer does not automatically mean better. More about this here.
Samsung is one of the top smartphone manufacturers and has been bringing strong smartphones onto the market with its own flagship series for years, which also regularly dominate our list of the best. With the new high-end model Galaxy S22 Ultra, however, things are quite different. The smartphone did “very well” in the test and also scored “very good” in all of the individual categories tested, such as performance, camera, display and equipment. Nevertheless, the S22 Ultra currently only ranks 5th on our list of the best.
It is all the more surprising, however, which smartphone takes first place instead: It is the previous model, the S21 Ultra (for testing). This is mainly due to the camera performance. While the S21 Ultra can secure the top grade of 1.0 here, the S22 Ultra scores a grade of 1.5 when it comes to the camera. This is primarily due to the fact that the photos not only tend to be noisy, but are unfortunately also not very detailed. All in all, the photo software on the S22 Ultra does not seem very mature.
Our verdict at the time of testing
“New design and a small pen – the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra shows only one weakness in our test – the camera. While the display and the performance are excellent and the battery and the equipment are still excellent, the photos leave a few wishes unfulfilled. So The photo software does not appear to be fully developed at the time of testing. Although the images are very good, they are not as good as we would expect from a Galaxy S22 Ultra costing around EUR 1,300. In a direct photo comparison, a Google Pixel 6 and the in-house competition, the Galaxy S21 FE, is also better. For fans of the Samsung Galaxy Note devices, however, it is worth taking a look at the Galaxy S22 Ultra – because Samsung has installed an S-Pen in the housing.”For a detailed test.

Data from the test laboratory
- Performance: Grade 1.2
- Equipment: Grade 1.3
- Battery: Grade 1.2
- Display: Grade 1.1
- Camera: Grade 1.5
- App Store: Grade 1.0
The Galaxy S22 Ultra from Samsung is a powerful, latest-generation smartphone. Unfortunately, you have to make compromises with the camera here. It is weaker than the previous model. With the camera rating “very good” (grade 1.5), the S22 Ultra still snaps photos at a very high level overall.
