Samsung Galaxy S23: Why it’s worth the wait

Samsung is currently hard at work on the Galaxy S23 – the next big smartphone flagship. If the rumors are true, then the S22 successor will be very exciting.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 already has a lot in store, but when we hear the rumors about the next generation Galaxy S23, then the wait is definitely worth it. You will probably have to be patient for around 5 more months – if Samsung will present the S23 like the S22 in February. The Galaxy S23 Ultra in particular should clearly stand out again.

Galaxy S23 Ultra with 200 megapixel camera

Since the Galaxy S20 from 2020, Samsung has installed a 108-megapixel camera in the Ultra model, which has gotten better every year. It was already rumored with the S22 that the South Koreans could integrate an even higher-resolution camera with a whopping 200 megapixels. Samsung presented the world’s first 200-megapixel Isocell HP1 sensor for smartphones in September 2021. However, that didn’t come to pass.

Samsung has further developed this image sensor and presented the Isocell HP3 at the end of June. But interestingly, it’s not supposed to be this version that will work in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Instead, according to the well-known leaker Ice Universe, the Isocell HP2 should be used, which Samsung has not yet announced. And this is said to be better than HP1 and HP3.

In addition, Samsung will probably again rely on a periscope camera with 10 megapixels and 10x zoom.

Latest Snapdragon instead of own Galaxy Exynos chip

So far, Samsung has followed a two-pronged strategy, with the Exynos processors developed by Samsung being installed in European models. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPUs were used in devices from other markets.

But now it will be the case that all premium devices from Samsung will rely on the Snapdragon CPUs. Accordingly, the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 will probably work in the Galaxy S23, which Qualcomm will introduce later this year.

This is actually good news for German users, because the two current chips, the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 and 8+ Gen1, currently lead the Antutu benchmark list. Accordingly, the US version of the Galaxy S22 is actually more powerful than the European version with Samsung’s Exynos 2200.

Galaxy S23 with camera under the display glass?

Although there were rumors that Samsung could install the front camera under the display glass, according to the Korean blog Naver, that seems to be off the table. This technology will only be installed in the S series starting with the Galaxy S24.

In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the recently introduced Z Fold 4 already have a selfie cam under the display glass. However, these folding cell phones are manufactured in significantly smaller numbers. The mass production of tens of millions of screens with the camera under the glass will probably only be possible from the Galaxy S24 onwards.

Galaxy S23 with a new design?

It seems that the Galaxy S23 models will be the same size as their respective predecessors. However, if we look at the camera design on the back, there might be some changes – at least judging by the concept designs that users have created based on recent rumors.

We can’t yet say whether Samsung is really making such a drastic change in the design of the camera. Anyway, we like the suggestion.

assessment

Based on the current rumor status, we will not see any major design changes in the Galaxy S23, but users can look forward to a strong camera update with 200 megapixels in the Ultra model and the upcoming Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm. The remaining specifications of the next flagship generations will probably be similar to the current ones: Same display size with identical adaptive refresh rate. The battery of the S23 Ultra should also remain the same at 5000 mAh. Will there at least finally be faster loading? There is not much information about this yet, but Samsung could again support a maximum of 45 watts.

A few more details will be leaked out over the next few weeks, which may provide more reasons to wait for the Galaxy S23 (Plus/Ultra).

A notice:

Of course, we have to keep in mind that the release of the Galaxy S23 is still quite a few months away. A lot can change in this time. But the rumors sound very plausible.
