After the box of Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung is preparing a sequel in the form of a Galaxy Z Flip 4 and a Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Seoul firm could even unveil a third thief, but we will come back to it.

This sequel would allow Samsung to further secure its position as leader in the foldable smartphone market, a place that should soon be called into question by the arrival of many competitors. Echoes already suggest that Samsung is planning a further increase in sales of folders. So what to expect from the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4? We take stock.

Design: innovation is not over (yet)

Upon their arrival, folding smartphones blew a breath of fresh air on the market, opening the way to many potential innovations. Barely a few years later, everything seems to have calmed down, with two formats well established and set to last.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 will therefore certainly not have the mission of reinventing warm water. Samsung should take advantage of its leading position and avoid taking too many risks, now that its format is starting to be followed by other brands.

On the screens, few changes

The most significant change could concern the Z Fold 4, which would now have a dedicated slot to store the stylus, according to TheElec. A sensible choice now that the Galaxy S22 Ultra has one. The screen could also shrink slightly, according to Ross Young, from 7.6 inches to 7.56 inches.

The Z Flip 4 for its part, would keep its slab size and would not integrate a camera under the screen, unlike the Z Fold 3 which already offers one. The Z Fold 4 could further improve this point.

A third folder on the table

In addition to the now traditional Z Fold and Z Flip, it is not impossible that Samsung is considering presenting a third folding model.

Based on the various concepts showcased at CES 2022, it’s likely to be a two-ply phone, as offered by the Flex S and Flex G concepts. It’s still too early though. to draw definitive conclusions on this subject.

Performance and load

In terms of performance, it’s hard to do better than the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3, since they were already equipped with one of the best chips of 2021, the Snapdragon 888.

And yet, the Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 could go a little further by equipping themselves with the Plus version of the Qualcomm chip. According to leaker Ice Universe, both phones would have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. The advantage could be clear: engraved by TSMC instead of the Samsung process, this new chip could slightly alleviate the heating problems noted on the first version.

Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 release date and price

We do not yet have reliable information on the release date of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4. We can, however, rely on the 2021 calendar from Samsung, which revealed its Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 on the 11 August.

On the price side, Samsung had made a big effort on the Z Flip 3 to bring it very close to the symbolic bar of 1000 euros, at 1059 euros. Difficult for the moment to know if the brand will lower the price further, but it seems unlikely now that the Flips have arrived at the same price level as the S range.

The Z Fold 4 for its part, could well lower its entry ticket even further. According to the specialized site SamMobile, Samsung was already actively working on it as early as September 2021, trying to reduce the cost of mass production per unit. We can add that the book format of the Z Fold seems to be the most imitated by the competition, which may mean that the number of suppliers of certain expensive components, such as the hinge, will tend to increase. But whoever says more suppliers says more competition and therefore a possibly reduced cost.
