Samsung mysteriously pushes back Galaxy S22 chip launch

Initially, Samsung was scheduled to unveil its new processor, the Exynos 2200, on January 11. The Korean company ultimately did not announce anything.

What happened at Samsung? At the end of December, the Korean brand announced on its Twitter account dedicated to its Exynos chips that it would unveil its last born on January 11, probably during a virtual conference. An event awaited by fans of the brand who, for the first time, were to discover a chip designed by Samsung and AMD, the American semiconductor manufacturer.

To everyone’s surprise, Samsung hasn’t announced anything. The Korean even deleted his tweets, as if nothing had happened. Asked by Business Korea, Samsung now says that the presentation of the Exynos 2200, its new chip, will await the launch of the Galaxy S22. To try to reassure, Samsung adds: “There is no problem with the production and performance of the processor”.

Samsung / AMD alliance

In the world of Android smartphones, chips from Samsung are not very popular. Faced with Qualcomm and MediaTek, which equip almost the entire market (despite some rebels like Google), the Korean is almost alone. This situation is all the more special given that, in most countries, Samsung smartphones also use Qualcomm chips. It is only in Europe and in a few Asian countries that Samsung markets smartphones with its own Exynos chips.

Deemed to be too energy intensive, Samsung’s chips are also criticized for their poor graphics performance (they use ARM Mali GPUs). It is precisely on this point that the alliance with AMD could be a game-changer. The Korean and the American, who announced their partnership in 2019, hope to achieve a feat on mobile. Based on the RDNA 2 architecture (the same as the next-gen consoles), the future GPU of the Exynos 2200 could be the first capable of supporting the ray tracing on smartphone. If Samsung and AMD do not miss each other, the Exynos 2200 could thus largely catch up with the Snapdragon chips of Qualcomm and, why not, compete with the overpowered processors of Apple.

According to several rumors, it is on February 9 that Samsung will organize its big Unpacked conference dedicated to the Galaxy S22 range. It is very likely that the Exynos 2200 will be discovered during this event … unless the reason for this delay is more problematic than announced.
