Samsung: the advertisement of its 200 MP photo sensor demonstrates its uselessness

Samsung has decided to make a great demonstration of its 200 megapixel Isocell photo sensor. Double-edged advertising.

To follow the megapixel race that Chinese manufacturers are fond of, Samsung unveiled its first 200-megapixel Isocell HP1 photo sensor in 2021. A record definition for a sensor that should eventually be found in smartphones. The brand then published an advertisement on May 26, 2022 to sell the capabilities of this photo sensor. An impressive demonstration, but a little counterproductive when you think about it.

A photo of 616 m²

The advertisement shows behind the scenes of a giant poster. A photographer uses Samsung’s 200 megapixel Isocell HP1 sensor to capture a very cute cat. Teams then take care of printing the photo on a poster of 28 meters by 22, or 616 m².

This is truly an impressive technological feat. We are now able to capture 200 million pixels in a tiny photo sensor. Beyond the demonstration, however, what does this advertisement really reveal?

What is the use of such a sensor?

What the hollow video actually indicates is that to make maximum use of this 200-megapixel sensor, you have to print a giant poster. Since the beginnings of digital photography, increasing the definition of sensors has made it possible in particular to improve the possible size of photo prints. It is obvious that we have now far exceeded everyone’s need.

In addition, Samsung never gives the exact details of the capture of this photograph. We know that in photography, the sensor is not everything, it is only the link in a large chain. To create a photograph capable of being printed on such a size, we suspect that the brand did not use a simple lens capable of being integrated into a smartphone.

Samsung further states that “All images shown are for illustrative purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product or images captured with the product. All images are digitally edited, modified or enhanced“. Be careful, this is something quite classic in advertising. We find this kind of mention below all smartphone advertisements that want to sell their photo capabilities.

Obviously, increasing the definition of a photo sensor can be useful. We think in particular of the ability to cut on part of the photo without losing data or increasing the amount of information that photo processing software can use. With a 200 megapixel sensor, Samsung also wants to improve video recording in 8K.

It is therefore not really this advertisement that will be able to convince us of the need for a 200 megapixel sensor in a smartphone. Still, taking a picture of a cat and displaying it on 616 m² is a safe bet. The best idea of this advertisement without a doubt. ?
