Samsung unveils foldable laptop

Hardware news Samsung unveils foldable laptop

Foldable smartphones have already been talked about a lot. The concept now extends to computers, with the demonstration of the Samsung Flex Note at CES 2022.

Can we imagine a foldable PC, as some smartphones have been? According to Samsung, yes. With the presumption of the Samsung Flex Note, the firm seeks to demonstrate its ability to create foldable screens. A desire that competes with that of ASUS, which unveiled the Zenbook 17 Fold OLED, the first foldable PC from CES. But unlike the latter, Samsung presents a concept, not a commercial product. There is currently no such announcement, although it is likely that we will hear about it soon.

Samsung presents at CES 2022 a concept of tablet transforming into ultraportable

Samsung’s idea is similar to ASUS’s: allow a 13-inch ultraportable to transform into a 17-inch tablet in landscape format.

As can be seen in the video, the lower part of the screen is used to display a virtual keyboard or a touchpad for a video game. But there are still many questions, including the adaptation of Windows 11 to this new design. It’s a safe bet that an update will allow the operating system to adapt to this new configuration.

A real growth market?

And this is precisely the second question to ask: will users be interested in this proposal? The touchscreen has so far failed to integrate into the habits of those using a PC. It is even the opposite, since the vast majority prefer the physical keyboard. This is also an element that Samsung has taken into account, since the Fold relies on a physical keyboard in addition. We could thus use it in a hybrid way.
